“America” – Sufjan Stevens

In 2017 Sufjan Stevens wrote “Christ would be ashamed of us all,” . He was referring to the refugee crisis, days after the inauguration of Donald Trump. “The truest of ‘Americans,’” he said, “have either been destroyed by the white immigrant, incarcerated, isolated, held captive, or stolen and enslaved.”

Even then, critics would speak of his songs as if they were romantic landscapes in a beautiful soundgarden. 4 years on, the romance is dead and all we see is barren torched landscape moistened with the tears of the few survivors who remember the world as it was…
